Hashtags are a convention used on Twitter to “tag” one’s posts (“tweets”), and thereby associate them with a particular topic. This makes it easier for others, who may be interested in finding tweets related to a particular subject or event, to retrieve them with a single search. For example, at any time of day or night you can see the recent conversation going on around Healthcare & Social Media by searching for the hashtag #hcsm. You can find more explanation from this document at the Twitter Help Center.
A couple of new sites are featuring “catalogs” of Twitter hashtags of interest to particular fields:
- The Healthcare Hashtags Project is collecting and cataloging hashtags related to healthcare
- eduTweetups is a new directory of Higher Education “tweetups” (meetups), hashtags, and Twitter chats
